 ANVIL  v1.2.0
 Semi-Modular Percussive Synthesizer (VST3 / AU)
 Tonecraft Tokyo
================================================================

* Overview

ANVIL is a semi-modular percussive synthesizer equipped with an
8-step sequencer and a modulation matrix.

  - 2 oscillators (5 Hz - 5 kHz / triangle, saw, square, sine)
  - Sub oscillator (1 octave down / sine, square)
  - Hard sync and linear FM
  - Self-oscillating 4-pole ladder filter (LP / HP)
  - 2 attack / decay envelopes
  - 4-slot modulation matrix
  - 8-step sequencer (3 lanes: pitch, velocity, and pan)
  - MORPH: Store 2 sounds and morph between them with a single knob
  - Lane macros: Scale all 8 steps in each lane together
  - MIDI CC learn for all parameters (right-click)
  - 20 factory presets

You can create everything from kicks, snares, and percussion to
metallic sound effects, swirling drones, and rhythmic patterns
with step-by-step panning.

* Requirements

  OS               Windows 10 / 11 (64bit)
                   macOS 11 or later (Apple Silicon / Intel)
  Format Windows: VST3 / Mac: VST3, AU (Instrument)
  Supported DAWs DAWs supporting VST3 or AU
                   (tested in Ableton Live)
  Polyphony Monophonic (1 voice at a time)
  Output           Stereo
  Sample rate      44.1 kHz - 192 kHz
  Window size      1200 x 750 px (fixed)
  Screen language Japanese / English (the InfoBar shows English when
                   the OS display language is not Japanese)

A slight latency is introduced for audio quality, but it is
automatically reported to your DAW so recording alignment is
preserved.

* Installation

[Windows]

  1. Extract this ZIP file.
  2. Copy the ANVIL.vst3 folder to the following location:

       C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\

  3. Launch your DAW and perform a plugin rescan.
     (If you copy the folder while the DAW is running, changes may
     not take effect.)

To uninstall, delete the ANVIL.vst3 folder you copied.
If you also want to delete user presets, also delete
%APPDATA%\Tonecraft Tokyo\ANVIL\.

[Mac]

  1. Extract this ZIP file.
  2. Copy ANVIL.vst3 and ANVIL.component to the following locations
     respectively:
     (~ represents your user home folder. You can open it by pasting
     the path into Finder: Go -> Go to Folder. Create the folder if
     it does not exist.)

       ANVIL.vst3       -> ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/
       ANVIL.component  -> ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/

  3. Open Terminal (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal), paste the
     following three lines one by one, and press Return:

       cd ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins
       xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine VST3/ANVIL.vst3
       xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine Components/ANVIL.component

     If nothing is displayed, it succeeded. If you do not run this,
     macOS will show messages like "is damaged and cannot be opened"
     or "cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified",
     and the DAW will not load the plugin. This command only removes
     the quarantine attribute that macOS attaches to downloaded files
     (you need to run it again when updating or reinstalling).
  4. Launch your DAW and perform a plugin rescan.
     (If the AU plugin does not appear in Logic Pro or other DAWs,
     restart your Mac.)

To uninstall, delete the ANVIL.vst3 and ANVIL.component you copied.
If you also want to delete user presets and settings, also delete
~/Library/Tonecraft Tokyo/ANVIL/ and
~/Library/Application Support/Tonecraft Tokyo/ANVIL/.

* Quick start

  1. Load ANVIL onto an instrument track in your DAW.
  2. Select a preset using the PresetBar at the top of the window
     (try F02 Deep Kick first).
  3. Start playback in your DAW. The sequencer starts running in sync
     with the host tempo. It will produce sound even without playing
     a keyboard.
  4. Use the knobs in the SEQUENCER PITCH lane to set the pitch for
     each step. The center position is 0.
  5. Shape the texture using CUTOFF and RESO in the VCF, and
     DECAY in the VCF EG.

If you want to check the sound while the DAW is stopped, play MIDI
notes. Each note plays the current step and advances the sequencer
by one step.

* About MIDI notes

  - The note number acts as transposition for the hit triggered by
    that note (C3 = +/-0). Transposition applies only to the played
    hit; once a step is triggered by host playback, it resets to
    +/-0. Only notes can transpose the pitch.
  - Velocity is multiplied with the value of the VEL lane.
  - Note length has no effect. Because the envelopes have no release
    stage, writing longer notes will not extend the sound.
  - Do not write chords. The plugin is strictly monophonic (one note
    at a time), and each note advances the sequencer by one step.

* How to use MORPH

  1. Create a sound and press SET A (it will light up).
  2. Change the sound. You may also switch presets.
  3. Press SET B.
  4. Move between A and B using the MORPH slider.

MORPH does nothing until both buttons are lit. Because MORPH can be
automated in your DAW, you can move dozens of knobs together with
a single automation lane.

Turning knobs at either extreme (0% / 100%) does not modify the
stored A or B sound. If you reshape the sound at an extreme, press
that end's SET button again to capture the new settings.

For detailed instructions, see the bundled ANVIL_Manual.html.

* About the first launch warning

[Windows]
Because the software is not code-signed, Windows SmartScreen may
display a warning. Click "More info" and then select "Run anyway"
to proceed.

[Mac]
Run the command in Step 3 of the installation instructions. Do the
same when updating or reinstalling.
