1. Overview

VELVOX is a voice plugin designed for gaming and chatting streamers. No audio knowledge is required. Just adjust jargon-free knobs (2 in the free edition, 4 in Pro) to polish your voice into a clear, engaging sound.

  • Simple controls with no expertise needed: Free of complicated audio jargon, you can intuitively enhance your voice using two knobs: WARMTH (“Fuller voice”) and PRESENCE (“Cuts through”).
  • Clean up your voice (Pro only): It balances volume inconsistencies and cleans up noise while you are not speaking.
  • AUTO “Quick setup” (Pro only): Just talk for 10 seconds, and it sets all four knobs automatically.
  • Zero latency: Processing introduces zero latency, so your voice stays in perfect sync with your lips.
  • Lightweight: Low CPU usage ensures smooth operation on the same PC you use for gaming.
  • Reliable distortion prevention: It automatically controls levels at the output so sound will not clip no matter how far you turn the knobs.

3. Installation

Installation (Windows)

  1. Extract the downloaded ZIP file.
  2. Copy the VELVOX.vst3 folder (or VELVOX Pro.vst3 for Pro) to the following location:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\
  3. Launch your DAW and run a plugin rescan (if you copy while the DAW is open, it may not detect the plugin).

About warnings on Windows:
Because the file is not code-signed, your browser may show a warning when downloading the ZIP. Please choose to keep/allow the download. Before extracting, right-click the ZIP file and select “Properties”. If you see “Security: This file came from another computer…” at the bottom, check the “Unblock” box and click OK before extracting.

Installation (Mac)

  1. Extract the downloaded ZIP file.
  2. Copy VELVOX.vst3 (or VELVOX Pro.vst3 for Pro) to ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/, and copy VELVOX.component (or VELVOX Pro.component for Pro) to ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/ (~ represents your home folder. In Finder, open the “Go” menu, choose “Go to Folder…”, and paste the path. If the destination folder does not exist, create a new one).
  3. Open Terminal (Applications → Utilities → Terminal), then copy and paste the following three lines one by one, pressing the Return key after each line:
    Free:

    cd ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine VST3/"VELVOX.vst3"
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine Components/"VELVOX.component"

    Pro:

    cd ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine VST3/"VELVOX Pro.vst3"
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine Components/"VELVOX Pro.component"
  4. Launch your DAW and run a plugin rescan (if you copy while the DAW is open, it may not detect the plugin. If AU does not appear in Logic Pro or other DAWs, restart your Mac).

About security warnings on Mac:
Because this plugin is not notarized, macOS will show messages like “cannot be opened because it is damaged” or “cannot verify the developer”, and your DAW will not load it unless you run the commands above. These commands clear the quarantine flag that macOS attaches to downloaded files. You will also need to run them again after updating the plugin. If no message appears after running them, it was successful.

Uninstall

[Windows] Delete the copied VELVOX.vst3 folder (or VELVOX Pro.vst3 for Pro).
[Mac] Delete the copied VELVOX.vst3 and VELVOX.component files (or VELVOX Pro.vst3 and VELVOX Pro.component for Pro).

4. Using with OBS

OBS cannot load VST3 plugins directly, so install the free OBS plugin “atkAudio Plugin” and host VELVOX inside it. OBS Studio 31.1.1 or later (64-bit) is required.

  1. Download and run the installer for your OS from the atkAudio Plugin download page.
  2. Open OBS and click “Filters” on your microphone audio source.
  3. Click “+” and add “atkAudio Plugin Host”.
  4. Click “Open Plugin Settings”, then choose “Scan for new or updated VST3 plugins” from “Options” to detect plugins (first time only).
  5. Select VELVOX (or VELVOX Pro for Pro) from the list and click “Load Plugin” to load it, then open the UI and turn the knobs.

Order of microphone filters:
If you use built-in OBS filters such as Noise Suppression, place VELVOX after them in the filter chain.

* In DAWs (such as Ableton Live), insert it as a standard audio effect on your vocal track.

5. The screen

Header bar (top)

  • Logo & version: Shows the logo and version in the top-left corner of the window.

InfoBar

  • Located right below the header. Hovering over a knob displays what that knob improves (shown in English on English operating systems, or in Japanese on Japanese systems; defaults to “Hover over a knob to see what it improves.”).

VOICE “Shape your voice”

  • WARMTH “Fuller voice”: Turn this up if your voice feels thin or light. Adds body and warmth. Automatically prevents muddiness even if turned up high.
  • PRESENCE “Cuts through”: Turn this up if your voice gets buried in game audio or background music. Automatically tames harsh S sounds when they get too strong, so it never sounds harsh or piercing. While active, the “Taming S sounds” dot beneath the knob lights up.

CLEAN “Clean up” (Pro only)

  • CONTROL “Evens out level”: Turn this up if you shout and clip, or if your voice level is uneven. Automatically evens out your voice to a comfortable level for streaming. While taming excessively loud sounds, the outer ring of the knob lights up.
  • NOISE “Removes noise”: Turn this up if keyboard clicks, air conditioner hum, or fan noise are noticeable. Cleans up noise while you are not talking (it cannot fully remove noise while speaking). While active, the “Removing noise” dot beneath the knob lights up. If the start of your speech gets cut off, turn it down.
  • In the free edition, it has a “PRO” badge and cannot be adjusted.

AUTO “Quick setup” (Pro only)

  • Press the button and speak normally for 10 seconds; it automatically configures all four knobs to match your voice and microphone. See “7. Using AUTO (Pro only)” for detailed steps. In the free edition, it has a “PRO” badge and cannot be adjusted.

OUT “Voice level” meter

  • If the meter bar stays within the colored band while you talk, your volume is at a good level for streaming.
  • It automatically controls levels at the output so sound will not clip no matter how far you turn the knobs.

6. How to use

  1. If you are unsure where to start, press AUTO first (Pro only; see “7. Using AUTO (Pro only)”).
  2. Speak into your mic and turn up PRESENCE, stopping where your voice no longer gets buried by game sounds or background music.
  3. Turn up WARMTH if your voice sounds thin or light.
  4. Turn up CONTROL if you shout and clip, or if your voice level is uneven (Pro only).
  5. Turn up NOISE if background noise bothers you (Pro only).
  6. Check the OUT meter to see if the bar enters the target band while speaking. If it does not reach the band, adjust your microphone input level (via your computer sound settings or audio interface knob). The volume slider in the OBS mixer is placed after VELVOX in the signal flow, so adjusting it will not change the meter here.

* Default values are 40 for WARMTH and PRESENCE, 50 for CONTROL, and 30 for NOISE (40 for both WARMTH and PRESENCE in the free edition).

7. Using AUTO (Pro only)

  1. Press AUTO.
  2. Read aloud the sample text starting with “Read aloud: …” shown on the InfoBar in your normal streaming voice (the sentence switches to a second one halfway through).
  3. Once 10 seconds of speech have been gathered, it finishes automatically and moves the four knobs.
  4. Afterwards, you can still turn the knobs manually to fine-tune to your liking.

Tips:
Silent pauses do not count toward the 10 seconds. Audio output continues with your current settings while listening, so your sound will not drop out even if pressed during a live stream. Pressing it again cancels the process without changing any knobs.

Status display

To the right of the AUTO button, the current status is displayed on a single line.

Display Meaning
PRESS AUTO AND TALK Standing by. Press to start listening.
LISTENING 7 Listening. The number indicates remaining seconds.
DONE Setup complete.
NO VOICE Could not gather 10 seconds of speech within 60 seconds after pressing. Knobs were not changed.
NO INPUT No audio detected. Check your mic or track input (the InfoBar shows the same prompt).

8. Tips

  • If you want to eliminate background noise even while speaking, combine it with Tonecraft Tokyo’s AI noise suppressor SILENTIQ (Trial / Full Version) or the built-in OBS Noise Suppression (RNNoise).
  • If you turn NOISE up too high (Pro only), the start of your speech may get cut off. If that happens, turn NOISE down.
