SNAREGRAFT is a snare instrument that grafts synthesized layers and snare wires onto your own snare sample. It is available in two editions: the free SNAREGRAFT and the upgraded SNAREGRAFT Pro, which adds up to 4 samples (Slots A–D), articulation keys, and per-hit WAV export (EXPORT). This manual covers both editions. Features exclusive to the Pro edition are marked “Pro only”.

In the free edition, Pro controls (marked “—” or “Fixed at 20” in the table above) are visible on screen with a “PRO” badge, but cannot be operated. Hovering the mouse over a control or PRO badge displays what it does in the bar at the top. Clicking a PRO badge opens the Pro edition information page. Saving, deleting, and exporting user presets is available in the Pro edition only. Factory presets and loading user presets saved with v1.3.0 (.snaregraft) are available in the free edition as well. Because the preset file format changed in v1.3.0, presets saved with v1.2.0 or earlier (.sgraft) cannot be loaded in either edition.

1. Quick Start

  1. Install the plugin and insert it on a track in your DAW.
  2. Send a MIDI note or press the PLAY button on screen to trigger a hit.
  3. Drop your favorite snare audio file (wav / aiff / flac / mp3) into the waveform area (in the Pro edition, up to 4 samples can be loaded into Slots A–D).
  4. Adjust per-hit variation in the FLUX section.

2. Panel Overview

SAMPLE (Slots A–D in Pro)

  • The layer for loading your own snare samples. You can also play the instrument using synthesized layers alone. The loaded filename appears in the upper left of the waveform.
  • Slots A–D (Pro only): Clicking the A through D buttons in the header row of the SAMPLE panel displays the waveform for that slot, and drag-and-drop and CLEAR apply to that slot.
  • Selection mode (Pro only): Choose how multiple slots are triggered: AUTO PATTERN (default: changes on every hit), VELOCITY (switches by velocity), LAYER (stacks all loaded slots simultaneously), or KEY SWITCH (switches slots via keyboard notes).
  • Per-slot sound shaping (Pro only): For the selected slot, SAMPLE panel controls (START, PITCH [±24 semitones], TONE, ATTACK, DECAY, LEVEL, and REVERSE) apply independently. Bringing LEVEL all the way down silences that slot. The panel color changes according to the selected slot (A: purple, B: pink, C: amber, D: mint).
  • In the free edition, only 1 slot is available, and Pro-only controls display a “PRO” badge.

BODY

  • The layer that synthesizes the fundamental resonance and body tone of the snare drum.

WIRES

  • The layer that synthesizes the buzz and sound of the snare wires.

STICK

  • The layer that synthesizes the sharpness of the stick attack.

BUZZ

  • The layer that receives synthesized outputs from the other layers and adds acoustic snare wire resonance. It replicates realistic physical snare behavior—such as wires not rattling on very light hits—and serves as the core feature of this product.

FLUX

  • Adjusts per-hit variations in pitch, decay length, tone brightness, trigger timing, and wire response. When playing back the same clip, the exact same variations are reproduced every time.
  • There are 8 variation axes, controlled collectively by the single FLUX knob. The 8 bars display the resulting values; dragging a bar directly switches that axis to manual mode (it lights up brighter). Pressing ↺ AXES resets all axes back to following the FLUX knob.
  • Free edition: FLUX is fixed at 20. The FLUX knob, dragging bars, and ↺ AXES are Pro only (the bars still move in the free edition to display variations).
  • The bars retain faint tick marks showing variations across the last 8 hits, letting you see at a glance how much variation is occurring.

WEAR

  • Simulates head and shell fatigue where the snare gradually tires and wears as it is repeatedly struck. Stopping transport resets it to its original state.

OUTPUT

  • The final shaping section, featuring drive, transient shaper, EQ, and room reverb.

Articulation Keys (Pro only)

  • Triggers distinct snare articulations (CROSS STICK, RIMSHOT, and FLAM) via MIDI notes. Clicking the NOTES button on screen allows you to remap the notes assigned to each articulation. In the free edition, a “PRO” badge is displayed.

EXPORT (Pro only)

  • A feature to export individual per-hit WAV files. In the free edition, a “PRO” badge is displayed.

SAMPLE Section

  • Slots A–D (Pro only)
Clicking the A through D buttons in the header row of the SAMPLE panel displays the waveform for that slot, and drag-and-drop and CLEAR apply to that slot.
  • Selection mode (AUTO PATTERN / VELOCITY / LAYER / KEY SWITCH) (Pro only)
Choose how multiple slots are triggered.
    • AUTO PATTERN (default): Changes on every hit; which slot plays is set by the hit’s position in the song, so the exact same sample is always selected for that position (whether playing back from anywhere in the timeline or rendering offline). Changes follow REPEAT (LOCKED / EVOLVE / FREE). It does not step through the slots in order, so the same slot can repeat.
    • VELOCITY: Switches slots according to playing velocity. Velocity ranges are divided evenly among the number of loaded samples, with Slot A assigned to the softest hits.
    • LAYER: Plays all loaded slots simultaneously on every hit. The layers combine the same way on every hit. The overall volume increases as more samples are layered (volume is not reduced automatically), so balance each slot using its individual LEVEL control. CROSS STICK does not trigger the sample layer, and EXPORT and FLAM also layer all slots in the same manner.
    • KEY SWITCH: Hitting a key switch note selects that slot for subsequent snare hits. Default notes in Ableton note naming are C0 = A, C#0 = B, D0 = C, and D#0 = D (MIDI 24–27). Key switch notes produce no sound. Notes can be remapped in the NOTES menu (KEY A–KEY D), where note names follow standard Ableton / Cubase octave numbering (middle C = C3). In modes other than KEY SWITCH, key switch notes trigger standard snare hits. Stopping and restarting playback resets the active slot to A. Playback starting after a key switch will not reflect that switch, so place key switches at the start of the section you want to switch (at the same position as the hit or slightly before). A key switch placed at the exact same position as a snare hit applies to that hit. While key switch notes are held, a hit plays every held slot layered (e.g. hold C0 and C#0 and hit: A and B). With none held, it plays the last key switch pressed, as before. In a MIDI clip, a key switch note that overlaps the hit counts as held. In KEY SWITCH mode, indicator lamps light up on buttons for the sounding slots. EXPORT renders using the combination active when export was initiated.
  • Per-slot sound shaping (Pro only)
When a slot is selected via the A–D buttons, the SAMPLE panel controls (START, PITCH [±24 semitones], TONE, ATTACK, DECAY, LEVEL, and REVERSE) apply specifically to that slot. Each slot retains its own settings independently. Bringing LEVEL all the way down silences (mutes) that slot. The SAMPLE panel’s accent color changes according to the currently active slot (A: purple, B: pink, C: amber, D: mint). AUTO-TUNE and sample embedding (EMBED) remain global across all slots.
  • Sample Start (0.0 .. 500.0)
Playback start offset of the sample
    Default: 0.0
  • Sample Pitch (-24.0 .. 24.0)
    Pitch adjustment for the sample
    Default: 0.0
  • Sample Tone (0.0 .. 1.0)
    Tonal brightness of the sample
    Default: 0.5
  • Sample Attack (0.0 .. 30.0)
    Attack time of the sample
    Default: 0.0
  • Sample Decay (10.0 .. 3000.0)
    Decay time of the sample
    Default: 3000.0
  • Sample Reverse (false / true)
    Plays the sample in reverse
    Default: false
  • Sample Level (-60.0 .. 6.0)
    Volume level of the sample
    Default: 0.0
  • Sample Auto-Tune (false / true)
Automatically detects fundamental pitch of sample and tracks BODY TUNE (*In the Pro edition, AUTO-TUNE uses only Slot A for the body pitch)
    Default: true
  • Sample Embed (false / true)
Saves loaded audio data into the DAW project (when off, stores file path only)
    Default: true
  • SOLO SAMPLE
Solos the loaded sample; other layers and snare wires are muted
  • CLEAR
Unloads the sample (in the Pro edition, unloads the currently selected slot’s sample). The three synthesis layers continue to sound
  • PLAY
Auditions a hit on screen, producing the same sound as sending a MIDI note from your DAW

Articulation Keys (Pro only)

Triggers distinct playing styles via MIDI notes. Unassigned notes trigger the standard sound as usual.

  • CROSS STICK (default note: 37)
Emulates cross-stick / closed rimshot stick work. Snare wires barely engage, producing a short, woody acoustic click. The loaded sample layer is not triggered.
  • RIMSHOT (default note: 40)
Emulates an open rimshot with a hard, bright attack and pronounced snare wire rattle.
  • FLAM (default note: 41)
A flam articulation where a soft grace note precedes the main stroke. The interval between the grace note and main stroke is controlled by the FLAM knob (10–40 ms, default: 20 ms). The FLAM knob lights up when a flam sounds. Because the main hit triggers delayed by this interval (a standard design in drum samplers), place your MIDI note slightly ahead on the grid to align the main hit precisely with the beat.
  • NOTES button
Clicking the button allows you to freely remap the MIDI note assigned to each articulation and key switch (KEY A–KEY D), matching the keymap of your favorite drum instrument.

WAV Export (EXPORT, Pro only)

Clicking the EXPORT button on screen opens a menu to export individual per-hit audio files. Running an export does not interrupt or affect real-time playback.

  • Count: 1 / 4 / 8 / 16 hits (default: 8)
  • Velocity: 40 / 70 / 100 / 127 (default: 100)
  • Articulation: NORMAL / CROSS STICK / RIMSHOT / FLAM
  • Export to folder…: Choose a destination folder and begin export.
  • Drag into your DAW: Grab the EXPORT button and drag it onto a track or a sampler in your DAW. The hits are rendered right then, with the count, velocity, and articulation chosen in the menu, and the files drop in. Dragged files live in a temporary folder and are removed after a day, so let your DAW copy them into the project (in Ableton Live, Collect All and Save).
  • Export specifications:
    • The n-th exported file sounds identical to “the hit played at beat n from the start of the song.” Placing a MIDI note at the exact same beat position in your DAW reproduces the identical sound.
    • Exported as 32-bit float stereo WAV files at the host DAW sample rate. Output volume is preserved as-is without normalization.
    • Leading silence is trimmed, and the file ends when the tail fades out (up to 6 seconds maximum).
    • Files are saved in the format SNAREGRAFT_<PresetName>_<Velocity>_<Index>.wav.

Amount of resonant snare wire rattle
    Default: 35.0

Threshold level where wires begin to respond. Below this level, wires do not rattle
    Default: -26.0
  • Buzz Tension (0.0 .. 1.0)
Tension of the snare wires. Higher values produce shorter, tighter resonance
    Default: 0.55
  • Buzz Decay (0.0 .. 600.0)
Decay time of the wire resonance
    Default: 180.0

OUTPUT Section

  • Pitch (-24.0 .. 24.0)

4. Tips

Basic Operation Tips

  • S (Solo) buttons: Clicking the S button on any layer lets you audition that layer alone.
  • PLAY button: Auditions a hit on demand to check your sound.
  • CLEAR button: Unloads the loaded sample (in the Pro edition, unloads the currently selected slot’s sample). The three synthesis layers continue sounding unaffected.
  • Waveform display: The white line indicates the playback start position, and the orange line shows the current playback position. The loaded filename appears in the upper left of the waveform area.
  • FLUX bars: Bar height represents the variation range for that axis, while the overlaid white line indicates the actual deviation applied to the most recent hit. Faint tick marks retain the variations across the last 8 hits, showing how much variation is occurring. Dragging a bar switches that axis to manual mode; pressing ↺ AXES returns all axes to following the FLUX knob (Pro only).
  • RND button: Randomizes the GLOBAL SEED value. This creates a completely new variation sequence without changing the instrument’s tonal character. When you find a variation sequence you like, save it as a preset.
  • BUZZ meter: The orange bar shows the signal strength exciting the snare wires, and the white vertical line marks the BUZZ THRESHOLD. Hits where the orange bar does not reach the white line will not trigger wire buzz.
  • Presets: 100 presets organized by genre. The first part of each preset name denotes its genre (TECHNO / HOUSE / POP / FUTURE BASS / TRAP / DNB / LOFI / ROCK / CINEMATIC / INDUSTRIAL), with presets in the same genre listed together. Within each genre, presets near the top offer tighter, drier sounds, while those near the bottom offer larger sounds with longer tails. Selecting a factory preset does not change your sample settings (selection mode, sound shaping for slots A–D, AUTO-TUNE, or embedding; in the free edition, Slot A settings like START are also preserved).
  • Pitch-rising snare rolls: Program repeating notes (e.g. 16th notes) and draw an upward automation curve on PITCH. Because the parameter value at the moment of each hit is sampled, each hit rises progressively in pitch without having to redraw notes on a piano roll ladder. Enabling KEY TRACK (Pro only) allows you to achieve the same effect using note pitches.
  • EMBED button: When left enabled, sample audio data is stored directly in your DAW project, so the snare will still play even if the original audio file is moved or deleted. In return, each embedded sample increases project file size by just under 1 MB.
  • NO TRANSPORT: When the DAW transport is stopped or does not report playhead position, variations run in free-running mode (variations will not be deterministic/reproducible in this state).

Pro Feature Use Cases (Pro only)

  • Removing mechanical repetition in rolls (Slots A–D / AUTO PATTERN):
Load different snare samples into Slots A through D and set the selection mode to AUTO PATTERN. The slot changes on every hit. Which slot plays is determined by the hit’s position in the song, so the exact same sample plays at that position every time (whether playing back from anywhere in the timeline or exporting). Changes follow REPEAT (LOCKED / EVOLVE / FREE). Because it does not simply step through the slots in order, the same slot can repeat.
  • Switching texture and character by dynamics (Slots A–D / VELOCITY):
Set the selection mode to VELOCITY. Velocity ranges are divided evenly according to the number of loaded samples, with Slot A assigned to soft hits, switching to Slots B, C, and D as you strike harder. This allows smooth transitions such as playing a tight sample on ghost notes and a hard-hitting sample on accents.
  • Balancing volume and pitch across separately recorded samples (Per-slot LEVEL / PITCH):
When combining samples recorded from different sources or microphones, use the independent LEVEL controls to balance volumes and PITCH (±24 semitones) to match tuning. Unneeded slots can be silenced by turning LEVEL all the way down. *Note that AUTO-TUNE tracks BODY pitch using Slot A only.
  • Stacking multiple samples for a massive snare (Slots A–D / LAYER):
Set the selection mode to LAYER. All loaded slots play simultaneously on every hit, letting you combine a deep body sample with a sharp transient sample to craft a single punchy, thick snare sound. Because volume does not decrease automatically, balance each slot using its individual LEVEL control.
  • Switching to a different snare for the chorus (Slots A–D / KEY SWITCH):
Set the selection mode to KEY SWITCH. By placing a key switch note (default: C0 to D#0 in Ableton display / MIDI 24–27) at the start of the chorus (at the same position as the hit or slightly before), subsequent snare hits will trigger the desired slot. The key switch notes produce no sound themselves.
  • Layering two samples on a single hit for extra weight (KEY SWITCH):
Striking a hit while holding two key switch notes plays both samples layered together (e.g. holding C0 and C#0 plays A and B). In a MIDI clip, place the two key switch notes overlapping the hit. Once released, playback returns to the single last-pressed slot.
  • Quiet ballads calling for an acoustic side stick (CROSS STICK articulation key):
Play MIDI note 37 (default). It produces a short, dry, woody acoustic sound with barely any wire engagement and no sample playback, ideal for quiet sections or acoustic arrangements.
  • Piercing, cutting attacks for choruses and accents (RIMSHOT articulation key):
Play MIDI note 40 (default). It delivers a hard, bright attack with prominent wire resonance, adding powerful accents that cut through dense mixes.
  • Adding tension and groove to fill-ins with grace notes (FLAM articulation key):
Play MIDI note 41 (default). A soft grace note precedes the main stroke, creating a lifelike, grooving hit. The interval between the grace note and main hit is adjusted with the FLAM knob (10–40 ms). Because the main hit sounds delayed by this interval (standard drum sampler behavior), place the MIDI note slightly ahead of the grid if you want the main stroke to land right on the beat.
  • Playing your drum library’s MIDI patterns without remapping (NOTES button):
Clicking the NOTES button on screen allows you to freely remap the MIDI notes assigned to CROSS STICK, RIMSHOT, FLAM, and the key switches (KEY A–KEY D). Matching your existing drum instrument’s keymap lets you trigger all articulations directly from your existing MIDI tracks without editing notes.
  • Placing one-shots onto other samplers or tracks (WAV export / EXPORT):
Click the EXPORT button on screen, choose the count (1 / 4 / 8 / 16 hits), velocity (40 / 70 / 100 / 127), and articulation (NORMAL / CROSS STICK / RIMSHOT / FLAM), and export to a folder. The n-th file sounds identical to “the hit played at beat n from the start of the song.” You get convenient one-shots rendered as 32-bit float stereo WAV files, with leading silence trimmed and tails cleanly cut (up to 6 seconds maximum). Real-time playback is completely unaffected during export.
